This summer we have been doing summer school. I organized a list of things we wanted to do this summer (read alouds, children’s author study, history, crafts, etc.) and made a large chart. I think the key to the success of this was planning it out before the summer began. Now I just have to request the books in advance and print out and collect items I need for art and craft projects.
So, for part of this, every week this summer we are studying an Artist or a Composer. This week it was Grandma Moses. We read a couple books about her, watched a DVD, and did a fun landscape. The kids really got into it. They needed to draw a picture of an event, walk away, and come back to it and add more detail. They were using pencil, markers, and watercolors. So fun to watch them connect to these famous artists through artwork and stories.
